A poem for Umpqua

Dedicated to the victims of the October 1st, 2015, massacre at Umpqua Community College in Oregon

An ordinary day was overhauled
When sudden noises woke me from my doze.
Who shoots off firecrackers in the fall?
And then I heard the screams of desperate throes.

With guns in many homes across the land,
Each lunatic can amplify his rage.
A man prepared can kill just one with hands,
But with guns kill a crowd upon a stage.

This day contained an awful tragedy,
And soon one more will come to take its place.
I know it’s time to change our policy,
But inaction will steal from us that grace.

Our blessings on the families who lost.
Our nation has become a tempest tossed.
